Great News for Ormia AI! 

We are building a next generation AI for drone detection in the most challenging environments, together with scientists from the University of Tartu, led by Kallol Roy and his team.

In a highly competitive contest, Ormia was selected for funding.

A little intro to the subject: radars and radio scanners miss drones that fly low or fly with no radio link. Ormia hears them. But hearing a sound is the easy part. Knowing what made it is the hard part. Critical infrastructure sites are full of noise, wind, engines, machinery, birds. In this project we build the AI that pulls a drone out of all of it and becomes sharper each time it meets a new site. That is what turns a microphone into a detector you can rely on.

What this selection validates isn't just our passive acoustic detection technology for critical infrastructure protection. It's the next step: the software layer that fuses our sensor data with Galileo and Copernicus.

And this isn't cosmetic. Galileo High Accuracy Service gives us sub-decimetre positioning and timing for our nodes - meaning detection resolution well beyond GPS alone, particularly in urban or industrial environments.

Copernicus (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, CAMS) brings the terrain context and atmospheric variables that directly condition acoustic propagation. Space inputs at the core of the system, not as decoration.

Here's the scale that puts it in perspective: Galileo already serves more than 5 billion devices worldwide (see comment). That's not a system waiting to prove itself - it's live European space infrastructure, in billions of pockets.

Our job now is to add one more stone to that edifice: turning that positioning backbone into real-time protection for the ports, energy sites and industrial facilities Europe can't afford to leave exposed. 

This week, 11 Estonian defence industry companies took part in the Higher National Defence Courses (ENDC) — a regular bi-annual programme organised by the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS).

The courses bring together politicians, senior civil servants, military officials, business and opinion leaders, journalists, and representatives from local government and civil society. Their aim is to deepen understanding of Estonia's security, foreign and defence policy — and to strengthen broad-based national defence cooperation across society.

PowerUP Energy Technologies, Intar Defence, Ormia Systems, Food Force, Wayren, Domin8, Threod Systems, Teknos, TGN Estonia, SensusQ and Datel had the opportunity to present what Estonian defence industry looks like in practice — our capabilities, our people, and our ambitions.

We thank the International Centre for Defence and Security and the Air Base for their collaboration and for including the industry in this important programme.

This week we had the opportunity to exhibit at the Estonian Defence Industry showcase at Ämari Air Base, part of the Higher National Defence Courses.

Ämari is one of NATO’s key frontline air bases in the Baltics, hosting allied forces and serving as a critical node in the region’s collective defence posture. Showcasing drone detection technology in that context felt fitting, this is exactly the kind of infrastructure that needs protecting.

The room included politicians, senior officials, military leadership, and business figures who take national security seriously. Exactly the kind of conversation ORMIA needs to be part of.

Passive acoustic drone detection isn’t a niche topic anymore and we witnessed that everyone is aware of this.

We are pleased to share that Ormia has been selected for a 12-month grant-backed mentoring program with Sparkup Tartu Science Park Science Park.

Sparkup Incubator is the only incubation program in Estonia fully focused on science- and technology-intensive startups.
The science park itself operates as an international growth center for deep-tech companies, powered by the University of Tartu, the City of Tartu, and a strong network of innovation-driven actors.

Since October, this support has been helping us structure our roadmap, strengthen execution, and prepare the next technical milestones for our passive acoustic ISR solution for drone detection.

Beyond the program, the real value lies in long-term mentoring, access to a high-quality research ecosystem, and continuous challenge from experienced founders and operators.

A solid step forward as we move toward field demonstrations and early reference deployments in Europe.

We are proud to announce that ORMIA has won the Prototron grant of €35,000 today.

This recognition is a strong validation of our work on passive, biomimetic acoustic drone detection, inspired by nature and designed for real operational constraints.

The Prototron support will directly accelerate:
 • the transition from TRL5 to TRL6,
 • field testing in real environments,
 • and the maturation of our hardware and signal processing stack.
